California YIMBY Statement on SB 312 – Governor Newsom Signs Law to Streamline Student Housing

Bill updates, improves prior legislation

Students deserve safe, affordable, and stable housing

SACRAMENTO – Today California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law SB 312, a bill introduced by Senator Scott Wiener and sponsored by California YIMBY, that updates SB 886, passed in 2022, which will help streamlining student housing on California university campuses.

California YIMBY CEO Brian Hanlon offered the following statement in response to the Governor’s signature:

“Governor Newsom has been consistent in supporting efforts to build more homes for our college and university students, and we’re grateful for his continued support,” said Brian Hanlon, CEO of California YIMBY. “SB 312 is a crucial technical fix that will allow previous housing legislation to do its work, by helping state universities address the massive student and faculty housing shortage on their campuses. We’re especially grateful to Sen. Scott Wiener for his continued focus on this issue.”
