Job Opportunity: Policy Director

Policy Director

The Organization

California YIMBY is a statewide housing advocacy organization dedicated to ending the housing shortage and making California an affordable place for everyone to live, work, and raise a family. California YIMBY is not a traditional non-profit: we reject the policy and political status-quo and work to realize fundamental evidence-based change to California’s housing policies, which would benefit tens-of-millions of people. Founded in 2017, California YIMBY has redefined the national housing debate by sponsoring transformative legislation like SB 50, and has helped draft and pass 12 bills that broke down exclusionary barriers and will enable millions of new homes to be built.

The Opportunity

California YIMBY is seeking a Policy Director to help define, shape, and guide our policy agenda, coordinate policy efforts with partner organizations, write policy briefs, op-eds, and other content for the public, and represent California YIMBY at events and in public.

The Policy Director will serve as a member of California YIMBY’s leadership team, report directly to the CEO, and develop California YIMBY’s policy agenda, including identifying policy areas beyond housing to make California affordable, inclusive, sustainable, and joyous for everyone.

The Policy Director will:

  • Define and manage California YIMBY’s policy agenda, which will shape our legislative advocacy and inform our research program. California YIMBY’s policy agenda may expand beyond housing to include transportation, climate, and other issue areas.
  • Analyze policy proposals.
  • Write policy papers, briefs, and content explaining housing policy.
  • Work with the communications team to publicize our policy agenda for non-specialist audiences.
  • Draft responses to fallacious policy proposals and media claims.
  • Represent California YIMBY at events and in the media through press interviews, op-eds, blogs, and social media.
  • Be available to advocate for legislation and lobby if need be.

Collaborate with senior staff to write grants and other development efforts

Diversity. Equity. Inclusion

These are not just words at California YIMBY. These values are key to furthering our mission to make California an affordable place to live, work, and raise a family. Representation matters, especially in our work to end the housing crisis. A crisis that, by design, continues to disproportionately impact communities of color. To address that historic and ongoing inequity, we are building a YIMBY movement that reflects California’s rich diversity and we actively seek diverse candidates with broad professional and lived experience.
