Job Opportunity: Legislative Advocate

Legislative Advocate

The Organization

California YIMBY is a statewide housing advocacy organization dedicated to ending the housing shortage and making California an affordable place for everyone to live, work, and raise a family. California YIMBY is not a traditional non-profit: we reject the policy and political status-quo and work to realize fundamental evidence-based change to California’s housing policies, which would benefit tens-of-millions of people. Founded in 2017, California YIMBY has redefined the national housing debate by sponsoring transformative legislation like SB 50, and has helped draft and pass 12 bills that broke down exclusionary barriers and will enable millions of new homes to be built.

The Opportunity

California YIMBY is seeking a Legislative Advocate to help make California affordable, inclusive, sustainable, and joyous for everyone. The Legislative Advocate will report to the Legislative Director and lobby for or against bills and budget items, analyze policies and draft recommendations, track legislation, and write materials for internal and public use.

The Legislative Advocate will:

  • Lobby for or against bill and budget items.
  • Represent California YIMBY through the legislative process: advocate, consult, and negotiate with legislators and their staff, committee consultants, executive agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Analyze and develop policy recommendations on legislation and the Budget Act.
  • Draft position letters and amendments on legislation.
  • Develop accessible materials on legislative matters for public use.
  • Monitor the status of California YIMBY’s priority legislation; keep up-to-date on bill status, committee hearings, and floor schedules.
  • Provide legislative updates and opportunities to the CEO and Legislative Director.
  • Ensure timely and accurate communication about the status of legislation to your colleagues, YIMBY orgs and volunteers, and other pro-housing allies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including in areas unrelated to legislation.
Minimum qualifications

Possess strong writing and communication skills, strong organizational, analytical, and project management abilities, and be comfortable working on a distributed team. The successful applicant will have a passion to end the housing crisis, demonstrate professionalism and discretion, understand California’s legislative process, and have a minimum of 1 year of relevant professional or academic experience.

Preferred qualifications

Possess expert knowledge in housing policy and politics, and have experience as a legislative staffer, Capitol Fellow, or policy analyst. Experience lobbying the California Legislature and 2 – 5 years of relevant professional or academic experience is also a plus.

Licenses / Certificates

Be a registered lobbyist or become registered within 60 days of employment.

Diversity. Equity. Inclusion

These are not just words at California YIMBY. These values are key to furthering our mission to make California an affordable place to live, work, and raise a family. Representation matters, especially in our work to end the housing crisis. A crisis that, by design, continues to disproportionately impact communities of color. To address that historic and ongoing inequity, we are building a YIMBY movement that reflects California’s rich diversity and we actively seek diverse candidates with broad professional and lived experience.

California YIMBY is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and is committed to providing equal opportunity for all employees and applicants. California YIMBY recruits, hires, trains, promotes, compensates, and administers all personnel actions without regard to age, ancestry, color, disability (mental and physical), exercising the right to family care and medical leave, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, marital status, medical condition, military or veteran status, national origin, political affiliation, race, religious creed, sex (includes pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and related medical conditions), and sexual orientation. California YIMBY will consider qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
